Nine-Run Second Lifts 'Claws

August 22, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

EASTLAKE, OH-A nine-run 2nd inning, which ties the BlueClaws record for most runs in an inning, propelled Lakewood to a 11-2 win over Lake County on Wednesday night.

The BlueClaws (29-27) take the 2nd game of the series after a 5-4 loss to Lake County (26-29) on Tuesday night.

The nine-run 2nd inning saw each BlueClaws starter get a hit and score a run except Welinson Baez, who drove in a run on a SAC fly. It featured an RBI ground- rule double by Quintin Berry, a two-run single by Tuffy Gosewisch, and a two-run inning-capping home run by Gus Milner.

It was Milner's 10th home run of the season and he becomes the first Lakewood player to reach double- digits in homers this season. Lakewood is the last team in the league to gain a 10-homer player. Milner scored twice in the inning as he reached on an error in his first time up. Lakewood sent 12 to the plate in the inning and eight had hits.

Lakewood previously had nine runs in an inning on June 5th, 2005, against West Virginia.

All nine runs, six earned, were charged to Hector Rondon (7-10), who came out after four.

That was plenty for Darren Byrd (8-10), who allowed just two runs over seven innings. Byrd is now 3-2 with a 1.87 ERA over his last five appearances.

Adrian Cardenas went 3-5 for the BlueClaws and Joel Naughton went 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

The rubber game of the series is Thursday night at 7:05. Lakewood sends Scott Mitchinson (2-1) to the hill against Lake County's Jeanmar Gomez (10-7).
