Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah extended its losing streak to five games Wednesday with a 7-3 loss to the Rome Braves. Greg Mullens (5-4) suffered his fourth loss of the season for Savannah while Rome reliever Jaye Chapman (3-1) earned the win. Ryne Reynoso pitched two innings for his eighth save of the year.

D.J. Wabick was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and a walk to raise his batting average to .299. Wabick is trying to become the first Gnat to hit above .300 in a season since Chad Chop in 2003.

Savannah scored the first two runs of the game in the fourth inning when Wabick walked with one out. A walk to Richard Pena put runners at first and second for Francisco Pena. Francisco singled on a ground ball to third allowing Wabick to score. The third baseman Danny Brezeale made a throwing error on the play allowing both Penas to advance 90 feet. During Josh Thole's at bat, Cole Rohrbough threw a wild pitch allowing Richard Pena to score.

Rome gradually chipped away at the Gnats lead, scoring one run in the fifth to make it 2-1. Rome then scored three in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Savannah pulled within one in the bottom half of the sixth when Wabick served as catalyst again. This time he led off the inning with a double. Two groundouts would eventually bring Wabick around to score and it was 4-3 Rome.

The Braves scored an insurance run in the eighth and added two unearned runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach at 7-3. Savannah had 5 hits in the game and committed four errors.

When the Braves and Gnats meet at 7:05 p.m. in Game 3, it will be the final Thirsty Thursday of the season featuring half price beers and Cokes along with $1 Papa John's Pizza slices presented by Connect Savannah, Rock 106.1 and Papa John's Pizza.
