Santos, Taubenheim Lead Fisher Cats to Rout of Rock Cats

Manchester, NH- Ty Taubenheim pitched eight innings of two-hit shutout baseball, and Sergio Santos went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three RBIs and four runs scored as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats blasted the New Britain Rock Cats, 12-0, Wednesday night before 3,753 fans at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

Taubenheim (2-1) won his second straight start for New Hampshire (65-64), reducing his ERA to 1.86 in four Double-A starts. He allowed only a second-inning double to Felix Molina and an eighth-inning single to David Winfree. The 24-year old right-hander struck out five and walked one. Jo Matumoto pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out.

Santos hit a solo shot, his 19th, in the bottom of the seventh inning off reliever Angel Garcia before adding his 20th home run, a two-run blast that highlighted a six-run eighth inning against Tristan Crawford. Santos has three home runs in three starts since returning from Triple-A Syracuse and is tied with David Smith for the club lead in homers.

Smith (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R) hit RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings, taking sole possession of the team lead in RBI (64) and doubles (33). Ryan Klosterman (2-for-3, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI) tripled and scored in the third inning, and added a two-run double in the eighth inning uprising for the Fisher Cats, who matched a season high for runs in a home game and evened their largest margin of victory this season -claiming a 12-run victory for the second time in their last four games.

Aaron Mathews (1-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) added a two-run double, his fourth two-run double in the last six games.

Oswaldo Sosa (1-4) allowed four runs on four hits in five-plus innings to suffer the loss. Sosa struck out four, walked two and hit two batters.

Rob Cosby singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. Erik Kratz and Dustin Majewski hit sacrifice flies, and Juan Peralta drove in Smith with a sixth-inning suicide squeeze bunt, the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game.

New Britain (60-65) entered the game leading the Eastern League in hitting but went the final 16 innings of the series without having a runner reach third base.

New Hampshire took two out of three games from New Britain to remain one game behind Portland in the race for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division. The Sea Dogs snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over the Binghamton Mets at Hadlock Field.

The Fisher Cats and Sea Dogs open a crucial four-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Thursday night at 7:05pm when New Hampshire left-hander Kurt Isenberg (3-9, 5.77) takes the mound against New Britain right-hander Felix Diaz (3-2, 4.45).
