Grizzlies Sweep Bees To Finish Home Schedule On Five-Game Winning Streak

August 22, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies were simply not to be denied in their home finale against the Salt Lake Bees, as they gave all 13,537 (a 2007 season-high) fans in attendance more than a few parting gifts to remember in a thunderous 9-2 win.

The Grizzlies finished off the Bees with a four-game sweep, their fourth sweep of an opposing team this season. With a 69-62 record, Fresno also has their best record of the 2007 season.

Against Bees starter Kasey Olenberger (10-7), the Grizzlies swatted three home runs, scoring eight runs on the eventual losing pitcher. All eight runs scored on Olenberger were between the fourth and six innings.

Fresno first baseman Scott McClain did his share of jogging in the game as he blasted three home runs in the game, part of a 4 for 5, 5-RBI game. The home runs were the 29th, 30th and 31st homers of the season for McClain, who became the first Grizzlies player since Doug DeVore in 2005 to hit three home runs in a game.

With his huge Tuesday, McClain is on the verge of breaking a couple of Grizzlies records. The all-time single season home run record is held by former Grizzly and current San Francisco Giants third baseman Pedro Feliz, who hit 33 homers for Fresno during the 2000 season. McClain is also only seven RBIs behind Damon Minor, who had 106 RBIs for the Grizzlies also during the 2000 season.

For the third straight night, the Grizzlies had a player come within a leg of the cycle, this time Nate Schierholtz, as he connected for a single, home run and triple, respectively. Schierholtz and McClain also each scored three runs in the game.

But Fresno's offense didn't play favorites, as all nine starters in the Grizzlies lineup collected at least one hit, while Schierholtz and McClain split seven hits between the two of them.

In his second start with the Grizzlies this season, Fresno's Jonathan Sanchez (0-0) had an outing to remember, as he struck out 10 Bees batters in just 4 and two-thirds innings, although he wouldn't get the win. Instead, reliever Erick Threets (3-1) would get the victory in relief for Fresno.

With the home slate finished for the remainder of the season, the Grizzlies have established themselves as one of the best teams at home in the Pacific Coast League after going 45-27 at Chukchansi Park this season.

The win also has the Grizzlies trailing first-place Sacramento by just 6.0 games after the River Cats loss earlier in the day. Fresno will begin a five-game series with the River Cats starting tomorrow.
