RoughRiders Lose Game, First Place to Missions

The San Antonio Missions took control of the Texas League South with a 6-4 victory Wednesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The win gave the Missions a one game lead over the RoughRiders.

The Missions struck early as Will Venable singled and scored on a Chase Headley double in the first. The Missions maintained the 1-0 lead until the fourth when Brett Dowdy hit his third home run, a two run shot, to push the Mission lead to 3-0.

The RoughRiders got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Chris Davis doubled and scored later in the inning on a John Mayberry single. San Antonio added another run in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-1, but Brandon Boggs responded in the bottom of the inning with his 16th home run that made the score 4-2.

San Antonio built a 6-2 lead with a pair of runs in the seventh. Nick Hundley hit his 20th home run of the year and Tim Brown scored on a groundout later in the frame. The ‘Riders began to chip away at the lead with a run in the seventh and eighth to pull within two at 6-4. Casey Benjamin's double drove in Brandon Boggs in the seventh and Emerson Frostad hit his 12th home run in the eighth.

Frisco starter Luis Mendoza (14-3) took the loss as he surrendered four runs on eight hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work. Mike Ekstrom (7-9) allowed just two runs over five innings to pick up the victory. Edwin Moreno earned his sixth save working a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Steve Murphy led the Frisco offense with a pair of hits while Will Venable and Chase Headley each collected three hits in the game for the Missions.

The series continues Wednesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark as Michael Schlact (3-0) takes the mound for Frisco against San Antonio's Wade LeBlanc (4-3). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
