Bad First Inning, Five Errors Bury Intimidators against Asheville

August 21, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Asheville, NC ? Kannapolis Intimidators starting pitcher Jason Rice allowed four first-inning runs and the Intimidators defense committed a season-high five errors as the Intimidators lost, 11-3, Tuesday night to the Asheville Tourists at McCormickn Field. It was the 10th straight time the Intimidators (27-30, 59-68) lost to the Tourists (34-23, 76-50) this season.

Rice has been plagued by walks in his time with the Intimidators this year. He allowed only one free pass, but left a few balls up in the zone and the Asheville bats made him pay. Rice allowed two doubles and three singles in the first inning, leading to four runs. Daniel Mayora?s double in the second inning, Asheville?s third of the night, gave the Tourists 298 doubles on the season. That total broke Lexington?s doubles record of 297 set back in 2001. Asheville ended with six doubles on the night, three by Mayora.

The scoring continued for the Tourists in the third inning as the Intimidators committed two errors. Asheville got three runs, but only one was earned.

Kannapolis began to crawl back in the game in the fifth inning as Mike Grace doubled and, after a ground out, Scotty Madsen hit a bunt single to score Grace. Madsen advanced to second on a throwing error and Sergio Miranda drove him in with a single. Miranda was promptly picked off of first to end the inning, killing the only significant rally Kannapolis had all night.

John Shelby started a new hitting streak a night after his 22-game hitting streak came to an end last night. Shelby hit an opposite-field solo home run, his 13th of the year, in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 8-3.

Kannapolis would score no more runs the rest of the way. Asheville scored three more as the Intimidators committed a total of five errors. The Intimidators had committed four errors in a game four times this season.

The Intimidators have lost all four games against the Tourists at McCormick Field.

Kannapolis will try to end its losing streak against Asheville Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
