Drive Sputter Versus GreenJackets
August 21, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (54-73, 25-33) had plenty of hits Tuesday night, 12 in all, but they lacked the big hit as they left 13 runners on base in an 8-3 loss in the series opener against the August GreenJackets (83-45, 33-25).
The Drive starting pitching continued to struggle as Jimmy James (2-4) lasted just 3.2 innings, surrendering all eight of the GreenJackets runs, five of which were earned.
Augusta broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second, tagging James for three runs on three hits. A throwing error by second baseman Chih-Hsien Chiang kept the inning alive, giving Mike McBryde the opportunity to double home two runs followed by a run-scoring single by Juan Jean.
Three singles and a hit batsmen to start the bottom of the third led to the Drive's first run of the game as Mike Jones singled with the bases loaded. Unfortunately the Drive would score just one more run in the inning as Jason Place grounded into a double play, scoring Paul Smyth.
It would be the closest Greenville would get as Augusta exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate. Jean and Bobby Felmy each tallied two RBI with a double and triple, respectively, and Joey Dyche added a sacrifice fly. That would bring an early end to James' evening as reliever Chad Povich came in to record the final out of the inning.
Jones added the Drive's final run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly, scoring Reddick who had led off the inning with an infield single. The young right-fielder finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Greenville bullpen continued to provide solid relief as Povich combined with Brantley New on 5.1 scoreless innings. Povich allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three in 3.1, and New surrendered one hit in 2.0 innings.
Dorman High School graduate Steven Calicutt (5-5) pitched effective enough for the GreenJackets to earn the victory. The southpaw allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their three-game series Wednesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM at West End Field. Right-hander Daniel Bard will toe the rubber for Greenville as Augusta counters with lefty Kevin Pucetas, a graduate of Broome High School in Spartanburg.
