Indians Rally Falls Short

The K-Tribe scored six late runs, but it wasn't enough as Potomac held on for a 9-6 win Monday night at Grainger Stadium. With Kinston trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, K-Tribe catcher Chris Gimenez hit a three-run home run to pull Kinston within one. It was the 19th homer of the year for Gimenez. The comeback was crushed quickly with a three-run home run from Potomac half an inning later, as Justin Maxwell hit the bomb in the top of the eighth. The K-Tribe came back again in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a run on an RBI by Dustin Realini. Kinston scored two more runs later in the inning when Potomac shortstop Ian Desmond overthrew first on a double-play attempt. Kinston had cut the Potomac lead to 7-6, only to be crushed again in the top of the ninth inning. The Nationals came back with two more runs on a bases loaded single by Brett McMillan. Kinston had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, but a ground out to second ended the final rally of the game. Kinston stranded a season high 13 runners on base. Johnny Drennen went 3-for-5 for the K-Tribe. Realini and Jerad Head each had two hits.

Kinston starter Jim Deters (10-4) picked up the loss for the K-Tribe, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits. The K-Tribe used four arms from the bullpen as Ryan Edell gave up three earned runs and a hit in the eighth inning. Kyle Collins gave up two earned runs in the top of the ninth. Potomac starter Ross Detwiler picked up his first professional win, going five innings, giving up just three hits and no earned runs.

Kinston takes on Potomac on Tuesday for game two of this three game series. Erik Stiller (3-4, 2.34) takes the mound for Kinston; game time 7pm at Grainger Stadium.
