Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- Carlos Fernandez hit a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Lowell Spinners rallied from a 2-0 deficit with single runs in the seventh, ninth and 10th innings for a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at LeLecheur Park.

The Spinners tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with an unearned run off Vermont reliever Ryan Harrison. Pinch hitter Yamaico Navarro reached on a throwing error by shortstop Dan Lyons to led off the inning, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rafael Cabreja. The error was just the 10th of the season for Lyons and just the third error by the Lake Monsters in the last nine games.

Then in the 10th inning Fernandez hit the first pitch from Harrison (1-4) over the fence in rightcenter for his first home run of the season, while giving Lowell its third win in the four-game series against the Lake Monsters.

Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead early in the game on a two-run double from Aaron Seuss in the third inning. Seuss had struckout in the first inning, but snapped a 1-for-24 slump with the two-run double to rightcenter to score Dan Lyons and Bill Rhinehart. Seuss would go on to single in each of his next three at bats for a 4-for-5 night.

Lake Monsters starter Glenn Gibson, who allowed six runs in just 1.2 innings while feeling under the weather in his last start on August 9th vs. Aberdeen, felt a lot better on Sunday as he held the Spinners to just three hits over the first six innings.

Gibson started the seventh inning and struckout DeShaun Brooks for the first out of the inning and his seventh strikeout of the game. But Gibson, after getting ahead of Kade Keowen 0-2, would throw eight straight balls to give Lowell a pair of base runners and end the night for the left-hander.

Reliever Caleb Staudt was greeted by an RBI double from Wil Vazquez for Lowell's first run, but Staudt left runners on second and third base by getting a groundout and flyout. Vermont had a chance for an insurance run in the ninth inning when Agustin German led off with a triple, but Boomer Whiting, Lyons and Rhinehart all grounded out to strand German at third.

Vermont outhit Lowell 11-5 for the game, including two hits for infielder Stephen King and a single for outfielder Stephen Englund in their debuts with the Lake Monsters after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League Nationals. Also joning Vermont from the GCL was outfielder Michael Burgess, who did not play on Sunday.

The loss dropped Vermont (31-25) back into a second-place tie in the the Stedler Division with Lowell (31-25). The Lake Monsters, who have dropped six of their last eight games, begin a two-game series at division-leading Oneonta on Monday night with Adrian Alaniz scheduled to start the 7:00 pm contest for Vermont.

NOTES: The Lake Monsters made room on their roster for the newcomers from the Gulf Coast League as outfielder Mark GIldea was placed on the disabled list and pitcher Devin Drag was promoted to Single-A Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League ... Vermont is now 3-7 vs. Lowell this season and will host the Spinners at Centennial Field September 1-4 ... The Lake Monsters are now 20-3 when leading after eight innings and 1-3 in extra-inning games.
