Loons Drop Opener to Dayton
August 16, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
The Great Lakes Loons struggle to generate offense, and a five-run first inning for the Dayton Dragons helped them beat the Loons in front of 5,594 fans by a score of 6-1.
The Loons recorded only four hits in the ballgame, and did not record a base-knock after Matt Berezay's two-out single in the third inning.
The Dragons jumped all over Loons starting pitcher Kyle Smit thanks to a five-run first inning highlighted by a Juan Francisco two-run triple and Drew Stubbs' two-run home run made it 5-0 before the first out of the game was recorded. After the Stubbs homer, Smit would settle down throwing six scoreless innings but the damage had been done. Dayton added a single run in the eighth inning as well.
Eduardo Perez provided the Loons with their only offense of the ballgame with his 13th home run of the season, a solo shot off Dayton starter Travis Webb in the second inning.
Smit (0-2) went a total of six innings for the Loons and picked up his second loss of the season thanks to the five run first inning. Joe Jones pitched two innings allowing one run in mop-up duty, and newest Loon Jonathan Figueroa pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Loons.
Webb (7-5) started for Dayton and allowed only one run on the Perez homer in five innings in picking up his seventh win of the season. Dan Donaldson and Terrell Young pitched the final four innings to complete the ballgame.
Game Notes: Before the ballgame, the Loons announced the addition of left-handed pitcher Jonathan Figueroa to the team's roster. Last year, the 23-year-old went 1-7 with a 7.29 ERA in 17 games. Back in 2002, Figueroa made a name for himself being ranked as the Dodgers' No. 2 prospect and 35th best prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America's 2003 top 100 prospect list after going 7-3 with a 1.42 earned run average.
The Loons-Dragons series continues Friday night when 2007 first-round pick James Adkins will get the start for Great Lakes. Gametime is set for 7:05 PM ET. It's time to get out the Aqua Net and teasing comb. Because it's time for big hair 80's Night! Be sure to stay after the game for fireworks powered by Dow Corning. Hopefully you have your tickets because the game is sold out! Tickets for the upcoming series Monday-Thursday against the Detroit Tigers' Midwest League affiliate West Michigan Whitecaps are available but are going fast.
