Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, IL - Right-hander Trevor Cahill pitched six innings of two-hit shutout ball Monday night, and the Kane County Cougars rolled to a 10-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,837 at O'Brien Field. Sean Doolittle homered and drove in three, and the offense took advantage of 11 walks from Peoria pitchers.
The Cougars gave Cahill a lead right away, scoring four first-inning runs against Al Alburquerque (1-4). Mike Massaro scored on an error by the pitcher, Greg Dowling singled home Jermaine Mitchell and Doolittle lined a two-run homer to right for a quick 4-0 lead. The Cougars tacked on four in the third when Todd Johnson walked with bases loaded, Massaro drove in another and Mitchell roped a two-run double.
The game's final runs arrive in the Cougars' half of the sixth, as Doolittle doubled home Alex Valdez and scored on a wild pitch. Meanwhile Cahill (8-4) cruised to the victory. The 19-year-old owns a consecutive scoreless innings streak of 16, has given up one unearned run in 12 innings against the Chiefs this year and posted nine quality starts in his last 11 outings. He yielded two hits -- both singles -- and walked two while plunking a pair of batters and striking out eight. He is 4-0 with a 0.97 ERA in his last six starts. Derrick Gordon kept the stellar pitching going with three innings of one-hit relief to earn his seventh save.
The Cougars (26-23), who were swept by the Chiefs (29-21) at home over the weekend, now go for the sweep Tuesday night at 7 CT when Travis Banwart (1-0) faces Marco Carrillo (4-5).
