Mudcats Clinch Series with Sunday Win

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. - Starter Blake McGinley pitched six shutout innings with only two hits while the bullpen held off a late Suns rally, as the Carolina Mudcats (53-67, 25-25) defeated the Jacksonville Suns (72-48, 31-19) 4-3 Sunday afternoon in front of 4,668 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Mudcats won their first series against the Suns in 2007, while Jacksonville dropped their third straight game and third straight series.

Carolina opened the scoring in the third inning against Suns starter Alvis Ojeda when former Suns infielder Eric Riggs singled home Jonny Raburn for a 1-0 lead. The run was unearned as a two-out error had previously put Raburn in scoring position.

The Mudcats continued scoring against Ojeda during the fourth inning. Lee Mitchell led off with a double followed by a Grant Psomas walk. Jai Miller's single loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan Bear then doubled off the right field line to plate Mitchell and Psomas for a 3-0 lead. Following a Brad Davis pop out, Ojeda left the game in favor of Cory Wade. With men on first and third base, Blake McGinley executed a sacrifice bunt, scoring Miller from third for a 4-0 advantage. Ojeda finished with four runs, three earned on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three and one-thirds innings.

On the other side Jacksonville's offense had trouble with another Carolina starting pitcher in Blake McGinley. The southpaw allowed Jacksonville's first hit in the third inning, a two out single from Blake DeWitt. Tommy Giles singled in the fifth inning, but a double play after ended the inning. McGinley faced the minimum during his final three innings of work. The Texan pitched six shutout innings with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

Both bullpens took over and kept the game in check. Suns reliever Cory Wade pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings behind Alvis Ojeda. B.J. LaMura pitched a perfect eighth inning while Ramon Troncoso dealt a perfect ninth.

Mudcats reliever Brandon Villafuerte struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, and allowed only a two-out double during the eighth inning before making way for Chris Mobley in the ninth.

The Suns quickly mounted a rally against Mobley as Blake DeWitt led off with a double followed by a Kevin Howard infield hit. A.J. Ellis then blasted his second homerun of the season, a three-run shot to left-centerfield that cut the lead to 4-3. Mobley then hit Alberto Concepcion with the next pitch to put the tying run aboard with no outs. Anthony Raglani struck out and Concepcion was thrown out at second base for a double play while Juan Gonzalez next bounced out to end the comeback bid.

Carolina's Blake McGinley (6-7) picked up the win while Jacksonville's Alvis Ojeda (4-6) fell in the loss.

The Suns have Monday off to travel to Montgomery, Ala. for a Tuesday series-opener against the division rival Montgomery Biscuits. Jacksonville entered Sunday with a two game lead in the South Division race over Montgomery. Suns RH James McDonald is the probable starter.
