Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Omaha needed extra innings to beat Memphis 7-5 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

The Royals scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning to grab the lead. Ryan Shealy drew a bases loaded walk to edge the visitors to a one-run lead before Matt Tupman's single plated a pair of runs and extended the lead to three runs. Tupman finished the day with a pair of hits and three RBI for Omaha. Memphis rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning with Tagg Bozied's 22nd round tripper of the season. However, Roberto Giron induced a game-ending ground ball off the bat of Jolbert Cabrera to seal the come-from-behind victory. Cabrera sent the game to extra innings with his ninth inning solo home run. Skip Schumaker led the ‘Birds with two RBI and was one of four Redbirds to collect two hits in the game.

Memphis starter Blake Hawksworth turned in five solid innings before leaving with a two-run lead. He gave up one run on six hits with a season-best seven strikeouts but was denied his first win since May 27 and his first win at home this season. Hugo Castellanos was the seventh Memphis pitcher to toe the rubber Sunday afternoon and took the loss. He gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits while committing two errors. Giron picked up the win with three innings of work out of the bullpen for the Royals. Starter Tyler Lumsden allowed three runs on five hits in four-plus innings before Thad Markray took over. Markray tossed four scoreless frames and allowed two hits.

The Redbirds will wrap up their four-game homestand with Omaha Monday night. Matt Ginter is scheduled to get the ball for the home team and face Royals right-hander Matt Wright. Game time is slated for 7:10 p.m.
