Lake Monsters Lose to Aberdeen

BURLINGTON, VT --- Aberdeen scored five runs on six hits to chase Vermont starter Glenn Gibson in the second inning as the Ironbirds went on to an 9-4 victory over the Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Ironbirds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Matt Angle walked, took second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a Matt Tucker sacrifice fly. Vermont took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a pair of unearned runs with the help of two Aberdeen errors for a 2-1 lead.

But Gibson, who has been fighting a bit of a flu bug the past couple of days, gave up singles to each of the first four batters in the second inning to give Aberdeen a 3-2 lead. A sacrifice fly plated another run and then with the two outs and the bases loaded, Anthony Martinez lined a two-run single to rightfield for a 6-2 Aberdeen lead and ended the night for Gibson.

Aberdeen added two more runs in the fourth on a single, three straight walks and a sacrifice fly, while the Vermont scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth on three singles, including an RBI single from Robby Tolan.

Vermont got an unearned run, its third of the game, in the eighth, while Aberdeen added a run in the ninth on three walks and a hit batter by reliever Alberto Tavarez.

Martinez was 1-for-3 with three RBI for the Ironbirds, while Franklin Gonzalez and Tucker both had two RBI. Angle went 0-for-2, but scored three runs after reaching on two walks and a hit by pitch. Zach Britton (4-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings to pick up the win for Aberdeen (26-23).

Gibson (4-1) allowed six runs on on six hits in just 1.2 innings for his first loss of the season and raising his ERA from 0.62 to 1.79 overall. The left-hander had entered the game having given up just four runs (three earned) over 43.2 innings in his first eight starts.

Sean Rooney was 3-for-4 for the Lake Monsters, while Aaron Seuess was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Caleb Staudt came on in relief of Gibson, allowing two runs on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

Vermont (29-20), which remains in first-place in the Stedler Division by a half game over Oneonta, heads out on a nine-game, 12-day roadtrip. The Lake Monsters play three in Batavia starting Friday night, have three days off for the All-Star Break, play four at Lowell and two at Oneonta before returning home for their next game at Centennial Field on Tuesday, August 22nd.

NOTES: Mark Gildea did not start for Vermont on Thursday night after being spiked sliding into second base in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday night and needing 10 stitches for a cut on his left arm ... Vermont starting pitchers have gone just 1.2 innings in each of the last two games for the Lake Monsters with Hassan Pena and Glenn Gibson going just 1.2 innings on Wedneaday and Thursday ... Vermont is now 3-13 this season when the opponent scores five or more runs, whilew 26-7 when holding opponent under five runs ... The Lake Monsters finished 2-4 in the six-game season series with Aberdeen.
