Dorn's Dinger Dooms Biscuits

August 8, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY -- Trailing by one run with a full count and two outs in the ninth inning, Daniel Dorn launched a dramatic two-run homer off of Nick DeBarr to give the Chattanooga Lookouts (26-20; 55-61) a 9-8 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (27-19; 62-54) in the opener of a five-game series on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Coupled with Jacksonville's 3-2 triumph over Carolina, the Biscuits fell three games behind the first place Suns in the South Division.

After Drew Anderson led off the ninth by grounding out to second base, Tyrell Godwin punched a single into centerfield against DeBarr (3-4). Enrique Cruz erased Godwin on a fielder's choice, bringing up Dorn with the Lookouts down to their last out. After falling behind in the count, 1-2, Dorn took two wide fastballs before sending DeBarr's next offering over the wall in right-center, his third home run of the season with Chattanooga.

Earlier in the day, Biscuits closer Dale Thayer, the Southern League's leader in saves, was promoted to Class-AAA Durham.

Brock Till (4-1) earned the victory for the visitors with a scoreless eighth, part of a four-man relief effort for Chattanooga that combined to blank Montgomery over six innings. Josh Roenicke finished things off for the Lookouts by pitching around leadoff singles from John Jaso and Gabriel Martinez in the ninth to record his fifth save.

The game began with a 39-minute first inning that saw both teams put together four-run rallies. Biscuits starter Wade Davis faced all nine batters in the Chattanooga lineup, serving up back-to-back RBI doubles to Cruz and Dorn and a two-run single to Mike Griffin.

Montgomery responded by sending eight batters to the plate against Lookouts starter James Avery, with Martinez's two-run single providing the biggest blow.

Neither starter survived too much longer after the first inning. Davis lasted only 2 1/3 innings in the game, his shortest stint of the season, surrendering five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Avery was knocked out of the game three batters into the fourth, giving up eight runs on seven hits and four walks.

In the losing effort, Montgomery did tie a Southern League record, collecting four sacrifice flies in the game. All came within the first four innings, with Jaso and Martinez supplying the final two sacrifice flies with back-to-back run-scoring flyouts in the fourth.

The Lookouts and the Biscuits play the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. 21-year-old lefthander Jake McGee will make his Biscuits debut, opposed by Chattanooga righthander Carlos Fisher (4-7, 3.61).
