Jaxx Score Five Straight But it Was One Short

(Sevierville, TN) August 8th- The Tennessee Smokies jumped out to a 6-0 lead and then hung on for dear life to beat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 6-5 in game one of a five game series from Smokies Park. The win moves the Smokies record to 24-22 in the second half of the season while the Diamond Jaxx record drops to 18-28.

Tennessee scored six runs in the first two innings off losing pitcher Travis Chick (4-5). Kyle Reynolds hit a three run homer in the first inning and Jemel Spearman hit a solo shot in the second. The Diamond Jaxx bullpen of Chris Jakubauskas, David Asher and Michael Hrynio combined to hold the Smokies to just four hits over the final seven innings. Spearman finished the night 3-5 to help spur a Smokies ten hit attack. Casey McGehee chipped in with two hits. Grant Johnson came out of the bullpen to pick up the win. Johnson (1-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief, striking out one.

Charlton Jimerson stroked a three run homer in a losing effort for the Diamond Jaxx. Brent Johnson had a pair of RBI's while Matt Tuiasosopo and Jesus Merchan had two hits each.

Game two of the five game series takes place on Thursday night at 6:15 CDT. Right-hander Doug Fister (3-8 4.64) gets the start for the Diamond Jaxx. Tennessee will counter with righty Mark Holliman (9-8 3.05).
