Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. - James McDonald pitched five shutout innings while relievers Greg Miller and Ramon Troncoso held on to the lead giving the Jacksonville Suns (71-45, 30-16) a 3-2 series-opening victory over the Carolina Mudcats (50-66, 22-24) in front of 2,626 Wednesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Suns entered Wednesday two games ahead of the second place Montgomery Biscuits in the second half South Division standings. The Biscuits are currently hosting the Chattanooga Lookouts in a five-game series.

Jacksonville opened the scoring against Montgomery starter Chris Seddon in the third inning when Kevin Howard doubled to left field, scoring Blake DeWitt for a 1-0 lead. The Suns extended the lead in the fourth inning as Tommy Giles' two-out, two-run single scored James Tomlin and Juan Gonzalez, opening a 3-0 advantage.

With that lead Suns starter James McDonald pitched well, allowing only two hits in five shutout innings. The right-hander struck out three without a walk.

Southpaw Greg Miller entered the game in relief and issued a leadoff walk in the sixth, but put the next two men down in order while next inducing a force out to end the threat. Miller nearly avoided trouble in the seventh inning. With a runner at first base and two out, Miller dealt a breaking ball for strike three that went wild allowing the batter Frank Moore to reach safely while prolonging the inning. Ryan Bear next singled home Chase Lambin with two out to cut Jacksonville's lead to 3-1.

The Mudcats nearly tied the game in the eighth inning against Miller. Jai Miller's single, Dante Brinkley's walk and Jonny Raburn's hit loaded the bases without an out. Eric Riggs' sacrifice fly scored Jai Miller to cut the Suns lead to 3-2. Chase Lambin struck out, but strike three went wild to move the runners to second and third base with two out. Grant Psomas next lined a ball that knocked Miller down and caromed toward the first base line. Without his glove, Miller ran toward the line, picked up the ball, and underhand tossed to first for the final out of the inning, preserving the 3-2 lead.

Suns reliever Ramon Troncoso pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the win.

James McDonald (5-1) picked up the win for the Suns while Chris Seddon (5-8) fell in the loss for the Mudcats. Troncoso (7) stayed perfect in save opportunities while sealing the win.

The Suns and Mudcats meet Thursday at 7:05 in the second game of a series scheduled for five games. Suns LH Clayton Kershaw will make his Double-A debut against Mudcats RH Jimmy Serrano.
