York Revolution News Release

Despite tying the game late, the York Revolution suffered a tough 8-6 loss to the Bridgeport Bluefish in the opening game of the series Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The loss drops the first-place Revs to 16-9 in the second half, while Bridgeport improves to 10-15.

York scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Jason Aspito, but Bridgeport came right out with three runs against Bryan Edwards in the bottom half of the inning. The runs scored on RBI singles by Jesse Hoorelbeke and Willis Otanez, and a sac fly by Marcos Sanchez, as nine men came to bat in the inning.

The Revs scored another run in the second on Matt Dryer's RBI double to right cutting the deficit to 3-2, but the ‘Fish struck twice more in the home half of the inning. Nick Ortiz, who led off with a double, scored from third on Bobby Malek's grounder to the mound that was misplayed by Edwards. Quinton McCracken also scored in the inning on a wild pitch, increasing the Bridgeport lead to 5-2.

Joe Jiannetti gave the Revs a two-out RBI single in the third, making it a 5-3 game. Aspito also tried to score on the play, but the throw home beat him there. After a collision at home in which Aspito knocked Sanchez to the ground, Sanchez, the Bridgeport catcher, went after Aspito with a hard shove. The benches cleared, and Sanchez was ejected from the game.

The Revs closed to within 5-4 in the fifth as Nate Espy led off with a triple to deep center. The play was initially ruled an error on Malek, but was changed to a triple after the game. It keeps Espy's hitting streak alive, which now stands at 13 games. Espy scored on Ramon Nivar's RBI groundout to shortstop.

Bridgeport tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on Sandy Aracena's RBI double, forcing Edwards from the game. It was the first run allowed by the Revs starter since the second inning.

The Revs clawed even in the eighth. Jiannetti worked a one-out walk, and scored on Justin Singleton's RBI triple down the rightfield line. After a pitching change that brought in closer Eddy Ramos, Dryer jumped on his first pitch, ripping an RBI single through the drawn-in infield to tie the game at 6-6.

The Bluefish went right back in front, however, in the bottom of the eighth. Ortiz stroked a leadoff triple to right-center. The game was then delayed a few minutes as the infield sprinklers turned on, creating an artificial rain delay. The first pitch after the delay was a wild pitch by Jeff Farnsworth, scoring Ortiz with the go-ahead run. Two pitches later, McCracken (4 for 5, three runs scored) pounded his fifth homer of the season over the right-center fence to provide the final margin.

Notes: The Revs are now 1-6 at Harbor Yard, and 4-6 against the Bluefish this season... York has held leads in five of the six losses to Bridgeport (the Revs have also come from behind in all four of the wins in the series)... Edwards had his 21-inning walkless streak snapped with a one-out walk to McCracken in the first inning... Espy's hitting streak is the second-longest by the Revs this season, two shy of the team-record 15 set by Rayner Bautista... Espy also holds a 36-game on-base streak, the longest in the Atlantic League this season... game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 Wednesday night, with David Maust (5-3, 3.70) making the start for York, opposed by Matt Beech (9-6, 4.36) of Bridgeport.
