Bears Devour Patriots, 10-5

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 10-5 before 5,154 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Marcus Nettles singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI groundout by shortstop Ramon Castro.

Newark scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Right fielder Jose Herrera singled and scored on an RBI double by left fielder Ruben Mateo. Catcher John Pachot followed with an RBI single to plate Mateo and scored on an RBI single by Nettles for a 4-0 lead.

The Bears added three more runs to the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Nettles singled and stole second and third. Castro was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners and second baseman Javier Colina then hit a two-run triple to plate both runners. Colina would score on an error that allowed first baseman Victor Rodriguez to reach safely.

Newark extended the lead to 8-0 with a run in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Mateo (1). The Bears made it 10-0 with two more runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Patriots scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a grand slam by first baseman Josh Pressley (11) that made the score 10-5.

Bears starter Harold Eckert (1-0) picked up the win, allowing five hits and striking out nine in six scoreless innings pitched. Patriots starter Brandon Knight (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears.
