Camden Offense Erupts For 9-4 Win Over Long Island

Camden Riversharks News Release

CAMDEN, NJ - A two-run double by L.J. Biernbaum in the second inning gave the Camden Riversharks a lead it would never relinquish in a 9-4 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday night at Campbell's Field. Biernbaum finished the night with a three hits and three RBI.

The ‘Sharks won for the third time in their last four games on the strength of clutch hitting, scoring six runs with two outs, including all three in the decisive second. Ryan Lehr, Matt DeMarco and Milko Jaramillo all singled to load the bases with nobody out and after a strikeout, a Pete Shier sacrifice fly tied the score at 2-2. Biernbaum, who leads the team with 63 RBI, then delivered his 18th double of the season to the left-field gap to put the hosts up 4-2.

Camden added some insurance on an RBI groundout by Cristian Guerrero in the fifth and a two-run home run by DeMarco in the seventh. RBI doubles by Biernbaum and Randy McGarvey made it 9-3 in the eighth.

Long Island would not score after the third as the Riversharks bullpen pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of starter Mark Ion before the Ducks scored a run with two outs in the ninth.

Ion, who was making his first start of the year after 24 appearances out of the bullpen, was knocked out of the game in the third after an Edgardo Alfonzo line-drive hit him in the elbow. He is day-to-day, but was unable to improve to 8-0 since he only threw 3.1 innings.

Aric LeClair (3-4) picked up the win, throwing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit. Tim Cain, who pitched the fourth and fifth, and Alberto Castillo, who threw the eighth, both put up scoreless frames for Camden. Ramon Linares pitched the ninth to close things out.

Ed Yarnall (4-3) suffered the loss, throwing five innings and allowing four earned runs. Alfonzo and Ray Navarrette each had two hits for Long Island (17-8, 52-36).
