Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Omaha, NE - Robby Hammock laced a one out, solo home run to right field in the top of the 11th inning to give the Sidewinders a 6-5 win over the Omaha Royals on Sunday afternoon. The blast was Hammock's fourth of the year and marked his second RBI of the afternoon.
Jailen Peguero escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 11th to earn the win. Peguero (5-2) got Ryan Shealy to pop up to shallow left field for the second out of the inning before inducing a groundout to second from Mitch Maier for the final out.
The Sidewinders raced out to leads of 4-0 and 5-1 early in the game only to see Omaha come back. Tucson scored four times in the top of the first on a three run double from Jeff Salazar and a RBI single by Hammock. After Shealy's double plated a Royals run in the bottom of the first, Chris Carter hit his 16th home run of the year in the top of the third to make it 5-1.
Shealy blasted a two run home run off Sidewinders starter Greg Smith in the bottom of the third to bring the Royals to within 5-3. Omaha plated single runs in the sixth and eighth to tie the game at five.
Smith worked five innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked one and did not record a strikeout but did pick Derek Wathan off first base in the fourth, giving him six pick-offs in five Triple-A starts.
Each team had a chance to win in regulation but could not convert with runners on base. Tucson put their lead-off man on in the seventh, eighth and ninth but did not score. Omaha loaded the bases with one out after tying the game in the eighth, but Brandon Medders got Wathan to pop up and Shane Costa to ground out to end the inning.
Costa doubled leading off against Peguero in the bottom of the 11th inning. It is the 43rd straight game in which Costa has reached base safely, tying Andy Tracy of New Orleans for the longest streak in the league this year.
The Sidewinders and Royals play game two of their series on Monday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Right-hander Enrique Gonzalez (6-8, 4.24) starts for Tucson against left-hander Tyler Lumsden (7-5, 6.14) for Omaha. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:00.
