Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC- The Jacksonville Suns (27-13) exploded with a six-run seventh inning to pull away for an 11-8 victory over the Carolina Mudcats (19-21) Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.

Jacksonville entered the sixth with the slimmest of margins, a 5-4 lead, but came out with a commanding seven-run lead. Mudcats reliever Scott Nestor faced control problems, walking two consecutive batters before giving up a three-run homer to Suns first baseman Alberto Concepcion. The Suns kept the inning going with four straight two out hits to end the inning with eleven batters being reaching the batters box.

Carolina did not give up as second baseman Eric Riggs cut the deficit by over half with one swing of the bat. Riggs faced Suns closer Ramon Troncoso in the eighth with the bases loaded when he rocketed a shot just over the right field wall. It was Riggs' second grand slam in three weeks.

The Mudcats benefited from a home run earlier in the game, a solo homer by first baseman Grant Psomas in the second. Carolina was attempting to fight back from a 5-1 deficit in the fourth inning and cut it to within one. Psomas flied home Lee Mitchell who led the fourth with a triple. An inning later, Chase Lambin increased his hitting streak to nine games and got a two-RBI double to make the score 5-4.

Jacksonville would explode the seventh, as reliever Mark Alexander picks up his fourth win in relief. Mudcats starter Jesus Silva sees his record drop to 0-4, lasting just 3.2 innings Wednesday.

Carolina will take tomorrow off as they prepare for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx who come to town Friday. The five game series will start at 7:15 with lefty Chris Seddon (4-7, 5.07) on the mound for Carolina and Travis Chick (4-3, 3.64) throwing for West Tenn.
