Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - A strong start from the rehabbing Shawn Hill wasn't enough as Potomac got its three-game homestand off on the wrong foot, dropping a decision to division-leading Wilmington Monday, 6-3, at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium.
Hill, who was scheduled to work three innings or 50 pitches, whichever came first, reached the three-frame limit first, needing just 35 pitches to record nine outs. The last Canadian to play for the Montreal Expos, Hill held the Blue Rocks scoreless, allowing three hits, striking out two and walking none.
Six of the nine outs that Hill registered came on the ground.
The Nationals got Hill some early run support, when Chris Marrero singled to open the second, moved to third on a single to right from Marvin Lowrance and then scored on a Brandon Powell sacrifice fly to make the score, 1-0.
Potomac doubled the lead in the third on an RBI-single from Ian Desmond, scoring Brett McMillan, who had singled to lead off the inning.
It was Craig Stammen's turn after Hill exited, and the Blue Rocks had more success against the Ohio native than the hurler from the Great White North. Stammen had won two of his last three decisions, but could not hold the 2-0 lead that he was staked to.
Stammen allowed two runs in the fourth on a Brian McFall homer and a Jeremy Cleveland sacrifice fly to tie the game.
McMillan helped the Nationals get on the board again in the fourth, with a single, scoring Powell from second and putting Potomac in front again, 3-2.
Wilmington struck back in the sixth against Stammen, when Jose Duarte singled home Cody Clark, who had led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
Josh Perrault came on and got out of the jam, retiring Marc Maddox on a ground ball to third with runners on first and second. Perrault was solid again in the seventh, striking out the side.
The right-handed reliever worked a perfect 1.1 innings and fanned three.
Jack Spradlin struggled in his third of an inning, surrendering the winning run on an RBI-single from Cleveland, scoring Clark.
McFall homered again in the ninth with a man on base to open up a three-run lead for Wilmington, making him the first Blue Rock into double-digit homers on the season.
Potomac and Wilmington continue their series Tuesday at The Pfitz, with a 7:35 start. RHP Julio Pimentel [7-4, 2.80] gets the start for the Blue Rocks and will be opposed by RHP Marco Estrada [1-1, 6.66] for the Nationals
