Davis Ninth-Inning Homer Gives Pelicans 5-4 Win

July 30, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

KINSTON, NC - Quentin Davis socked a solo home run with one away in the top of the ninth as Myrtle Beach claimed game one of an important three-game series with Kinston 5-4 before 1,250 fans at historic Grainger Stadium Monday night. The Pelicans improved to 21-16 in the second half and 51-55 overall, while Kinston dropped to 21-14 and 66-38.

Myrtle Beach never trailed in the game as Eric Campbell continued his torrid hitting with a two-out RBI double in the top of the first, marking the fourth straight game in which he has driven in the first run of the game for the Birds. Jordan Schafer pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second with a two-out RBI single, and Davis added a two-out RBI knock of his own in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Kinston came back with a couple of runs in the fifth, as John Drennen and Armando Camacaro hit consecutive doubles to get the Indians on the board and Mike Butia followed with a bloop RBI single to drive in Camacaro and cut the margin to 3-2. The Pelicans added an insurance run in the eighth when Jose Camarena drove a run-scoring double to left-center to push the advantage back to 4-2, but Kinston answered back in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Gunderson retired the first two hitters quickly, but his first pitch to Stephen Head came inside and hit him to extend the inning for Matt Whitney. Whitney promptly knotted the game at 4-4, socking the second pitch he saw deep over the left-center field wall for his sixth home run of the year.

The Pelicans didn't flinch however, as Davis got ahead in the count 2-0 against Erik Stiller and hammered a fastball down the right field line for his third home run of the season. Kris Medlen then came on to close things down in the ninth, and punched out Jose Constanza with the tying run at second base to end the game.

Gunderson (4-4) was charged with a blown save but still got the win while Stiller (3-3) took the loss. Deunte Heath started for Myrtle Beach and turned in a quality start, holding the K-Tribe to two runs on five hits over six innings. He tied a career-high with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Davis's home run put the exclamation point on his 3-5 night, his second straight multi-hit game. Campbell doubled twice and drew a walk while Larry Williams returned with a 2-4 night after missing four games with back spasms.

Game two in the series is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, as Myrtle Beach's Dustin Evans (2-5, 4.35 ERA) battles Kinston's Sung-Wei Tseng (3-7, 4.04 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
