Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem started strong, but fizzled over the final six innings as Salem rallied back twice for a 9-7 victory over the Warthogs in the series opener on Monday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs led 6-1 after three innings, but the Avalanche tallied eight runs over the final six frames for the win. The five-run comeback ties the largest margin a Winston-Salem opponent has rebounded from this season and drops the Warthogs 7 games back of Myrtle Beach in the race for the second half playoff bid.

The Avalanche took an early lead as Mitch Einertson crushed the first pitch he received from Garry Bakker over the left field wall to give Salem a 1-0 lead. Winston-Salem responded emphatically with six runs in the second inning. Javier Castillo led off the inning with a solo blast to tie the game at one. Cole Armstrong followed with a single and Paulo Orlando doubled to put runners on second and third. An infield hit by Tyler Reves plated a run giving the Warthogs their first lead. Robert Valido lined a two-out RBI single and Micah Schnurstein followed with a two-run single to put Winston-Salem in front 6-1.

Salem roared back with four runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run single by Ryan Reed and run scoring hits by Wladamir Sutil and Jose Lopez to cut their deficit to 6-5. The Avalanche completed the rally in the fifth inning as Mark Ori lined an RBI single that scored Einertson to knot the score at six. Winston-Salem jumped back in front in the sixth inning on an RBI double by C.J. Lang to take a one-run lead.

Once again, the Avalanche rallied back as Jose Lopez greeted Warthogs reliever Ricky Brooks with a three-run, bases clearing double to put Salem back in front 9-7. Winston-Salem was not able to rally back as Avalanche reliever Evan Englebrook worked two innings to earn the win and Ryan McKeller (6-5) recorded the final three outs for his sixth save in as many tries. Matt Zaleski allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief to take the loss for Winston-Salem.

These same two teams meet again in game two of this three-game set on Tuesday, July 31 at Ernie Shore Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with LHP Clayton Richard (7-7, 3.70) taking the mound for the Warthogs. The Avalanche will hand the ball to RHP Rory Shortell (6-3, 3.07).
