Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC--The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, executed their largest comeback of the season Monday night at Ernie Shore Field to secure a 9-7 victory over the Winston-Salem Warthogs. Salem climbed from five down after two to topple the ‘hogs.

Salem trailed 7-6 as the seventh inning opened and Matt Zaleski took the hill for Winston-Salem. Mark Ori opened the frame with a walk and Pat Osborn singled. After Ryan Reed struck out, Zaleski hit Billy Hart with a 1-2 pitch. That loaded the bases for Jose Lopez who jerked a ball over the center fielder Paulo Orlando. His double scored every runner and the Avs nabbed a 9-7 lead.

Winston-Salem (13-22) established its lead with a six-run, 10-batter second inning against Salem (16-19) starter Chris Salamida. Javier Castillo opened the frame with a solo home run to tie the game at one after Mitch Einertson's solo homer in the Avs' first. With two on and one out, Tyler Reves singled to left to bring Cole Armstrong home. After a sacrifice fly, walk and RBI single, Micah Schnurstein delivered the final blow, a two-run single to finish the scoring.

After that, though, Salamida did not surrender a run and allowed just two base runners in his final three innings. In the process, Salem siphoned runs off of the lead. In the fourth, Salem scored four runs thanks to a two-run single from Ryan Reed, an RBI single from Jose Lopez and a run-scoring double from Wladimir Sutil. In the fifth, Salem evened the score as Mitch Einertson doubled to open the inning and scored on Mark Ori's single. Overall, Einertson scored three times.

Winston-Salem took the lead against Evan Englebrook in the seventh, but the bullpen allowed just the one run in four innings of relief. The triumvirate of Englebrook, Chris Blazek and Ryan McKeller struck seven batters out and allowed two hits.

With four RBI, Lopez equaled a career high he set June 13th at Myrtle Beach. The Avalanche's largest comeback victory prior to Monday's ball game was four. That happened four times-all against Lynchburg.

Tuesday's game two is scheduled for 7:00 as the Avs send Rory Shortell to the mound to face lefty Clayton Richard.
