THE HILLCATS...open a mini three-game homestand against the Frederick Keys tonight at City Stadium...Salvaged a series split with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory at Myrtle Beach last night...Scored the winning run on back to back wild pitches with two outs in the eighth inning...Went 3-4 on their seven game road swing...Are just 18-33 (.353) in their last 51 contests... Are 5.5-games behind the Wilmington Blue Rocks for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division...
THE KEYS...Captured the Northern Division first-half championship despite a record of just 32-37...Are the first team in league history to advance to the post-season by virtue of a losing half-record...Are seeking to become the first Northern Division squad to advance to the Mills Cup for three straight seasons since Wilmington went four straight years from 1993-1996...Are currently hitting a league-worst .246 as a team and have posted a league-worst 4.87 team ERA...
2007 vs. FREDERICK: Lynchburg has dominated the season series, taking 14 of the first 17 match-ups (.824) ...The Hillcats have gone just 31-54 (.365) against the rest of the Carolina League...Lynchburg narrowly captured the 2006 season series, 10 games to 9...Overall, the Hillcats have an edge in the lifetime series 136-116 (.540) and have gone 71-57 (.555) in 128 all-time games at Lynchburg City Stadium...
PITCHER-OF-THE-WEEK: RHP Jose Diaz was named Carolina League Pitcher-of-the-Week today after posting a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA (11.0 ip, 11 h, 3 r, 2 er, 1 bb, 11 k) in two starts last week...The 20-year old had made just one appearance above the Gulf Coast League level prior to the starts with the Hillcats this past week...
RAISE THE ROOF: OF Brad Corley has raised his batting average from .198 to .273 since May 30th... Additionally, the slugger is hitting 57-168, .339-5-29 over last 41 games...
DAY-TO-DAY: 2B Shelby Ford entered yesterday's game as a defensive replacement after not appearing in any of the first three games of this series due to lower back stiffness...However, he left the game after just one at-bat...The 22-year old is batting 45-134, .336-4-28 over his last 34 games...
SPEEDING: OF Pedro Powell leads the league with 45 steals in 56 attempts (80%)...The 23-year-old led the league last year with 63 stolen bases and is attempting to become just the 2nd player in league history to win back-to-back stolen base crowns...Jack Mitchell led the league in the category in both 1952 and 1953....
EJECTION: 2B Jose De Los Santos was ejected in the 3rd inning last night for arguing balls and strikes...
