Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, rode a sturdy mound performance from Sergio Perez Sunday night to defeat the Potomac Nationals 5-1 on LewisGale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Perez allowed just one run on four hits in six innings to earn his sixth win of the season. The Avalanche (15-19) supported Perez in the second inning as Justin Jones of Potomac (19-17) walked Orlando Rosales to open the frame. Next, Pat Osborn stroked a double into the leftfield corner that scored Rosales for a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Potomac tied the game on a solo home run from Ian Desmond, his second in as many days. When the home half finished, though, Salem had re-established its lead. Mitch Einertson and Orlando Rosales notched back-to-back singles to open the frame. After Pat Osborn grounded out, Chris Johnson bounced a ball to third that Matt Rogelstad threw to first to retire Johnson. On the play, Einertson scored. In the fifth, Salem struck the mortal blow on Jones's evening. With two out and Osvaldo Fernando at second base with a double, Billy Hart singled to left to score Fernando. A throwing error moved Hart to second. Next, Einertson plugged a single to left that plated Hart for a 4-1 Salem lead. The final Salem run crossed in the sixth when Jose Lopez's ground ball to short stop brought Pat Osborn home. Perez nabbed his first win in three starts with his sixinning performance. Salem upped its record to 17-7 against lefty starters with the win.

Balancing act: The Avalanche finished its season series with the Potomac Nationals yesterday with a 5-1 win in Salem. Tonight's game with Winston-Salem is just the 11th game between the Warthogs and Avalanche this season. Salem plays the representatives from Winston-Salem 10 times over the final 37 games of the season. Seven of those come at Ernie Shore Field in North Carolina.

Down the middle: Salem's victory last night bumped its July record back to .500 at 12-12. The Avs are 7-7 at home this month and have split ten games on the road. Salem won the same amount of games that it lost in both April and June.

Av Hog Committee: The Avalanche and Warthogs have combined for more than 10 runs per game in their 10 meetings this season. The winning team has plated at least four runs in nine of the 10 games. Salem has a .299 batting average against the ‘hogs this season, the second-best batting number for the Avs against any team this year. Salem is only better against Lynchburg with a .310 average.

Surfside six: Avalanche third baseman Chris Johnson enters tonight's match with Winston-Salem on a sixgame hit streak. Since Johnson's streak began on July 24th, he's totaled six RBI, 29 percent of his total with the Avalanche. He's raised his average from .276 to .298 since the outset last Sunday.

Trouble aloft: Potomac scored its only run yesterday on a fourth-inning home run off the bat of Ian Desmond. The Nationals homered in each game of the four-game set. Salem has allowed at least one long ball in seven of its last eight games.
