Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL - Due to recent health complications to BayBears Manager Brett Butler, the Arizona Diamondbacks have named Matt Williams the BayBears interim manager. Butler had a mild stroke Friday in Montgomery, and has been away from the BayBears the last two days receiving treatment at a Mobile area hospital.
Diamondbacks Director of Player Development A.J. Hinch made the announcement late Sunday afternoon during the Diamondbacks game against the Atlanta Braves. This will be the first managing assignment for Williams, who is currently a television analyst on the Diamondbacks broadcasts on 3TV in Phoenix.
The 17-year Major Leaguer hit 387 career home runs while playing for the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks. Williams was on the 2001 Diamondbacks World Series Championship team. He won four gold gloves, and was named an All-Star five times. Williams and Butler were teammates with the San Francisco Giants, with both playing in the World Series against the Oakland A's in 1989.
Williams is expected to be in uniform for the BayBears game Monday night against Mississippi at Hank Aaron Stadium. Hitting coach Dave Hansen managed his third game Sunday, in the BayBears 3-2 win over Montgomery.
