Mudcats Fall to Suns

July 29, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC- A brilliant first start for Carolina Mudcats (17-20) pitcher Chris Volstad was spoiled in the eighth inning, amounting to a 3-1 Jacksonville Suns (26-11) victory at Five County Stadium Sunday.

Volstad entered the eighth carrying a shutout, but trouble came his way with two outs in the inning. The Marlins' top prospect gave up a pair of singles which prompted a visit by Mudcats pitching coach Scott Mitchell. Volstad stayed in the game but gave up an RBI single to Suns first baseman Corey Dunlap. The single tied the game at one and ended the afternoon for Volstad.

Carlos Martinez then came in with the game tied, but that didn't last long. Martinez's first delivery was a wild pitch which scored Kevin Howard from third, giving the Suns a 2-1 lead. Jacksonville would add an insurance run thanks to an Alberto Concepcion single.

Carolina tied to muster as much offense as they could Sunday but Suns starter James McDonald was on point, getting 11 strikeouts. McDonald went seven innings allowing one run off four hits.

The lone Mudcats run came in the fifth, a solo shot by Grant Psomas.

Carolina will send Gaby Hernandez (6-8, 3.34) to the mound as he goes up against Justin Orenduff (6-3, 3.66). First pitch is set 7:15.
