Smokies Win Fifth Straigh

Jackson, TN- The Tennessee Smokies (55-50, 19-18) scored seven runs in the final three innings to turn a 6-2 deficit into a 9-7 win over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (46-61, 15-22) on Sunday afternoon at Pringles Park.

Matt Avery pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win, moving his record to 2-0 on the season. Rocky Roquet picked up his third save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Brodie Downs suffered the loss for the Diamond Jaxx. Downs (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

The Smokies pounded out fifteen hits in the contest; seven of the nine batters in the Smokies lineup had at least two-hits. Jorge Cortes (2-for-4) drove in three including an eighth inning two-run double. Issmael Salas (2-for-5) had a pair of doubles, including one in the ninth which snapped a 7-7 contest scoring the games winning runs.

The Smokies will have won a season high five straight and will go with southpaw Paul Schappert (3-6) tomorrow night while the Jaxx will counter with Justin Thomas (3-7). Tennessee will be back at Smokies Park for a five game series with the Montgomery Biscuits starting on August 2nd. Tickets can be purchased by calling 286-2300 or online a smokiesbaseball.com
