Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL. - The Kane County Cougars picked up their fifth win in the last six games by virtue of a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon over the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 5,249 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Trevor Cahill picked up his sixth win of the season, and Andrew Carignan worked a flawless ninth for a save.
Cahill gave up a game-starting home run to Javis Diaz in the first for a quick 1-0 deficit, but the Cougars answered the call against Fort Wayne's Drew Miller in the bottom half, as Sean Doolittle smashed a two-out single to right-center to score Josh Horton, who had walked, stolen a base and taken third on an error. The Cougars scored the final run of the game in the fifth when Larry Cobb grounded out to bring home Greg Dowling.
Cahill settled down after the rocky first inning, retiring 10 straight at one point. He started the sixth inning but left without recording an out. A walk, double and intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs, and Scott Moore entered and got out of the jam to preserve the lead. Then Derrick Gordon got Moore out of a tough spot in the seventh and logged the eighth, setting up Carignan's second save in the ninth. Cahill (6-4) gave up one run on four hits, walked three and fanned seven in five-plus frames, and Miller (4-5) took the loss for the Wizards (14-20).
The Cougars (15-19), who finished 5-3 on their eight-game homestand, head to Burlington, Iowa, for a two-game set against the Bees (17-18) that starts Monday night at 7 CDT. Scott Deal (5-8) will face Mario Santiago (2-7).
