Sea Dogs Lose Slugfest, 20-13

Portland, Maine- Sunday was a wild day at Hadlock Field as the Portland Sea Dogs fell to the Connecticut Defenders 20-13. The two teams combined for a franchise record 33 runs on 36 hits and four errors in a game that lasted 3:42 before a crowd of 7.037.

The two teams didn't waste anytime scoring as the Defenders jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning. Portland fought back with four runs in their half of the first led by a three run homer by Andrew Pinckney. Neither starter would settle down, Portland starter Charlie Zink who entered the game with the leagues sixth best ERA went 4.0 innings allowing 12 runs, a franchise record for a starting pitcher. Dave McKae lasted 2.0 innings for the Defenders allowing 11 runs, 10 earned. Neither pitcher received a decision.

The Defenders were led by Julio Cordido who was 4-6 with a career high seven RBI's. Tyler Von Schell added two home runs in the Defenders offensive attack. Von Schell has now hit four home runs in the last three games.

The Sea Dogs offensive attack was led by Jeff Corsaletti who collected four hits and Dusty Brown, who is now hitting .463 in the month of July.

Osiris Matos (5-0) was the winning pitcher tossing three innings allowing two runs on two hits. Chris Jones (0-1) takes the loss for the Sea Dogs in his Double-A debut. Jones who was just called up from Single-A Greenville tossed two innings allowing six runs on five hits.

The Sea Dogs embark on a 6-game road beginning on Tuesday night in Bowie against the Baysox. RHP Justin Masterson will get the start against RHP Fredy Deza.

Notes...Portland's team ERA went from 3.88 to 4.15 by allowing 35 runs in the last 16 innings pitched...The Sea Dogs finished 4-4 on their homestand and suffered their first series loss at home since they were swept by New Hampshire on June 30-July 3...The 20 runs scored by Connecticut was a franchise record against Portland and the most scored in the Eastern League this season... At least one run was scored in every inning with the exception of the seventh... All 18 starters collected at least one hit in the game... Defenders manager Shane Turner was ejected in the sixth inning.
