Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - The Jacksonville Suns (67-40, 26-11) scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning off of Chris Volstad then held on late to defeat the Carolina Mudcats (45-61, 17-20) by the score of 3-1 in front of 2,857 Sunday at Five County Stadium.

The win came a day after Jacksonville took a ninth inning lead only to have it fall in the bottom of the inning. The Sunday win was the Suns' 10th comeback in the seventh inning or later during 2007.

Carolina starter Chris Volstad and Jacksonville starter James McDonald battled through the first four innings without much trouble. Eric Riggs smashed a one-out double in the first for Carolina but was caught stealing at third base for the second out ending an early rally. Jimmy Rohan recorded the Suns first hit in the third inning but was stranded at second base as the next three went down in order.

The Mudcats broke through in the fifth inning when Grant Psomas hit a leadoff homerun, his 14th of the season, over the leftfield wall for a 1-0 lead. James McDonald only allowed two more baserunners the rest of his outing as he went seven innings with one run on four hits, two walks and eleven strikeouts.

The Suns took advantage of a two-out mistake in the eighth inning. With two out, Juan Gonzalez rolled a ball to the shortstop Chase Lambin who booted the ball for an error. Kevin Howard followed with a single and Cory Dunlap next smashed a single past the first baseman to score Gonzalez and tie the game 1-1. The Dunlap hit knocked Volstad out of the game, but reliever Carlos Martinez could not stop the bleeding. His first pitch went wild allowing Kevin Howard to score and open a 2-1 lead. Alberto Concepcion next singled home Dunlap to finish the scoring at 3-1.

Volstad left the game after seven and two-thirds innings with three unearned runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Suns reliever Brian Akin allowed a one-out double in the eighth inning followed by a walk, but recovered with two strikeouts to end the threat. Closer Ramon Troncoso issued a two-out walk in the ninth inning, but induced a groundout to end the game.

James McDonald (3-1) picked up the win for the Suns while Chris Volstad (0-1) fell in defeat after allowing three unearned runs. Troncoso (5) saved the game for the Suns.

The Suns and Mudcats meet in the third game of the series Monday at 7:15 p.m. Jacksonville RH Justin Orenduff will face Carolina RH Gaby Hernandez. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
