Phillies Take Series from Thunder

July 29, 2007 - Eastern League (EL1) - Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA -- There was a lot to be pleased with if you were wearing a Phillies uniform Sunday: achieving your first Sunday home victory in eight tries, taking three of four from the front-running Trenton Thunder, getting six shutout innings from your starter in a 6-2 victory, and last but certainly not least, watching Joey Hammond reach 1,000 hits in his distinguished career.

Hammond had reached on an error in the second and scored ahead of Matt Padgett's eighth home run, then doubled in a run in the third for his 999th hit. He looked at a called third strike in the fifth, and came up in the seventh with a runner on third and two out in what was then a 4-1 game.

He worked the count to 3-2 against right-handed reliever Michael Gardner, then lined a shot into right field for the fifth run and his second RBI of the game.

Phillies starter Carlos Carrasco (4-1) displayed a fastball that reached 96 mph, not to mention tremendous staying power as he threw six scoreless innings under almost constant duress. The Thunder put the leadoff man on base five straight innings starting with the second, and Carrasco, the top-rated prospect in the Philadelphia system, was more than up to the task.

In the sixth, the Thunder loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a hit batsman, but Carrasco escaped the inning with a groundball out. The 20-year-old right-hander allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three. Carrasco threw 97 pitches -- 62 for strikes.

The Phillies (55-53) jumped ahead 4-0 after three innings, Padgett supplying much of the offense with a two-run homer and a run-scoring single.

The Thunder (64-42) got home runs from Dan Conway and Bronson Sardinha. Jason Jones (8-6) took the loss.
