Montgomery Biscuits News Release

HOOVER -- Wes Whisler pitcher 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball at Regions Park Saturday night as the Birmingham Barons shut out the visiting Montgomery Biscuits, 2-0.

Whisler (5-11) had led the league in losses, and was facing Biscuits ace Wade Davis (4-1), who had not suffered a loss since August 31 on 2006. But the Barons lefty still found a way to deal the Biscuits their seventh loss in their last eight ballgames.

Birmingham's offense got to Davis in the seventh inning, as he tired. He had allowed just two hits entering the inning but cleanup man Thomas Collaro plopped a single into left center to begin the inning. Davis ran the count full with desingated hitter Cory Aldridge. Davis tried his curveball, which had led him to seven strikeouts through six innings. But Aldridge was ready for it and grounded it inside the first base line for a runs-scoring triple. It was Aldridge's second triple of the game, and he would score two hitters later on a Ricardo Nanita sacrifice fly.

The Biscuits' best scoring chance came in the eighth inning. Whisler exited stage left after allowing consecutive two-out singles by Fernando Perez and Brooks Badeaux. Birmingham manager Rafael Santana brought on closer Oneli Perez, who walked Reid Brignac and set up a bases-loaded, two-out confrontation with cleanup man Evan Longoria. Perez fanned Longoria with a slider that the slugger missed by a foot.

The second game of the series is Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Biscuits lefty James Houser will pitch against Birmingham righthander Jack Egbert.
