Nickerson spins gem as Whitecaps blank Kernels, 5-0

West Michigan starter Jonah Nickerson held the Cedar Rapids Kernels to just two hits and struck out seven as he tossed a complete game shutout in front of 5,065 fans Saturday night on Cargill/Special Olympics Night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Nickerson (9-6) faced one batter over the minimum 27 and gave up a single to Ryan Mount and a double to Peter Bourjos. The game was played in a speedy two hours and four minutes as Nickerson induced 16 groundouts from Kernel batters. It's the second time in three games that West Michigan has shut out the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids starter David Herndon (8-7) gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out four over seven innings pitched. Blake Holler pitched two innings of relief and gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

Ryan Strieby was 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBI for the Whitecaps.

The loss drops the Kernels to 16-18 in the second half and 54-49 overall as West Michigan improves to 22-12 and 60-44.

The final game of this four game series is Sunday afternoon at 2 pm as Trevor Bell is scheduled to start for the Kernels. Gates open at 1 pm and the first 1,000 kids, 12-under, through the gates receive a free lunchbox from McDonald's.

It's also a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day as fans can get popcorn for $1; get autographs from the Kernels from 1:20 to 1:40 pm on the main concourse; play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo for a chance to win a trip to Anaheim over Labor Day; and run the bases and play catch in the outfield thanks to Steak-N-Shake.

The Kernels hit the road for a four game set at Lansing starting Monday, July 30 and then two games at Clinton on August 3-4 before starting a 12-game, 13-day home stand on Sunday, August 5th against Clinton at 2 pm. The home stand features the first visit of the Great Lakes Loons to Cedar Rapids and the final time the Peoria Chiefs and hall-of-fame manager Ryne Sandberg visit Cedar Rapids during the regular season.
