Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, Ariz. - Round Rock starting RHP Juan Gutierrez carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before unraveling Thursday night, as the Sidewinders beat the Express
6-1.
The trouble started for Gutierrez after he retired Alex Romero with a ground out, Carlos Quentin doubled down the left field line to break up the no-hitter. In last night's game Quentin broke up The Express' no-hit bid in the bottom of the seventh as well.
Chris Carter then singled in Quentin to tie the score at 1-1.
Robby Hammock and Jeff Salazar followed with walks to load the bases with just one out. Then Mark Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to break the tie and make it 2-1 in favor of the Sidewinders. Gutierrez induced Brian Barden into an inning ending double play.
The Sidewinders tacked on insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Carter that scored Alberto Callaspo. Then Jeff Salazar knocked in three runs on a base clearing triple to make the score 6-1.
Gutierrez dominated the Tucson hitters, walking only Robby Hammock in the bottom of the second inning before losing the no-hitter. The Sidewinders stuck in a two-game offensive slump were at one point 1-47 going back to the second half of yesterday's doubleheader.
Sidewinders' starter Casey Daigle pitched a strongly, allowing only one run on three hits and a walk in seven innings.
Round Rock's only run came off of a solo home run by Brooks Conrad that landed just over the right field fence in the first inning.
