Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY -- Javier Brito went 3-for-6 with five RBIs as the Mobile BayBears (14-19; 51-52) hammered out a season-high 17 base hits in a 12-5 rout of the Montgomery Biscuits (21-13; 56-48) on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
With the decision, Mobile clinched the series victory. Montgomery fell three games behind the victorious first place Jacksonville Suns in the South Division.
Biscuits starter Derek Feldkamp (2-7) recorded only six outs while surrendering six runs on six hits, with Brito responsible for the majority of the damage. The BayBears' All-Star first baseman crushed a three-run homer off of the scoreboard in the first inning and doubled home two more runs in the second innings, coming plateward himself on Carlos Gonzalez's RBI double.
Jeremy Flanagan relieved Feldkamp to start the third and held Mobile to goose eggs until a Ronnie Merrill two-run homer in the fifth.
The BayBears put the game away with four runs against Evan Meek in the seventh inning, with Justin Upton's three-run home run capping off the scoring.
Of Mobile's 17 hits, six apiece came against the duo of Feldkamp and Meek in their 2 2/3 combined innings. Gonzalez spearheaded the effort with a 4-for-5 showing, with ninth-place hitter Rusty Ryal adding three hits in four at-bats.
BayBears starter Max Scherzer (2-3) earned the victory a day shy of his 23rd birthday. The Missouri product limited Montgomery to three hits and two runs, walking three and striking out six.
In the losing effort for the Biscuits, first baseman Gabriel Martinez cracked his eleventh home run of the season and drove in three runs. Montgomery's rehabbing Major Leaguers also performed well, with reliever Tim Corcoran striking out a pair of BayBears in a perfect sixth inning and catcher Josh Paul going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The finale of the five-game tilt will be held on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., with Biscuits lefthander Jon Barratt (2-7, 5.27) opposing BayBears righthander Brooks Brown (1-1, 4.50). The evening includes the second act of the Summer Entertainment Series presented by WSFA 12, featuring the Purple Party Dude, Reggy!
