Volquez Shuts Down Beavers

OKLAHOMA CITY - Edinson Volquez allowed only one run and struck out eight in six innings of work and Guillermo Quiroz, Adam Fox and Nelson Cruz each hit home runs to lead the Oklahoma RedHawks to a 6-1 victory over the Portland Beavers at AT&T Brickyard Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Volquez (2-0) gave up only two hits and walked three in six innings to earn the win. At one point, Volquez retired 11 straight Portland batters and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Portland starter Roger Deago (1-2) surrendered only three hits through five innings, but took the loss after allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings, striking out three.

Portland (42-62) managed only three hits off three Oklahoma pitchers in the first game of an eight-game road trip.

Oklahoma (51-50) snapped a two-game home losing streak and has now won six of their last seven games.

Victor Diaz singled home two runs in the sixth inning to erase a one-run Portland lead. In the seventh, Oklahoma added four more runs on a two-run home run from Quiroz and solo shots from Fox and Gold.

Ray Chang's fifth inning double was the first Portland hit of the game and Chang scored the Beavers' lone run when Justin Hatcher doubled him home one batter later. Drew Macias' eighth-inning single was the only other Portland hit. The Beavers left the bases loaded in the first inning and left five men on base for the game.

The two teams will play the second game of the four-game series Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: Portland on Tuesday placed outfielder Hiram Bocachica on the active roster ... also Tuesday, left-handed pitcher Justin Hampson was recalled by San Diego, left-handed pitcher Royce Ring was optioned to Portland and outfielder Mike Sansoe was placed on the disabled list (retroactive to July 20) with a left hamstring strain ... Beavers coach Jose Castro stood in for manager Rick Renteria, who is on vacation ... In two Triple-A starts this season, Volquez has surrendered two runs in 13.0 innings, striking out 14.
