Beavers, Timbers Announce Creation Of 'Community Fund'

Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Merritt Paulson, the new owner and president of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers, today announced the creation of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers Community Fund. Paulson's vision is to make the charitable fund the largest of its kind in Triple-A Baseball and United Soccer Leagues by utilizing the unique profile of the professional sports teams as a catalyst for community growth and improvement.

The mission of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers Community Fund (PBPTCF) is to make life better for children and families of the greater-Portland area. The teams will strive to reach this goal through focused giving each year, as well as dedication to strengthening the bond between the professional sports teams and their fans through extensive community outreach.

"Community outreach is a central mission of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers," Paulson said. "We are in a unique position to have a positive impact on our surrounding area, and I could not be more pleased to announce plans for the community fund, which will play a key role in our efforts."

Though the fund will officially launch in 2008, the Beavers and Timbers kicked off their community-based philanthropic efforts with a presentation of $10,000 to Hollywood Little League of Northeast Portland during Friday's Beavers game at PGE Park to assist with the organization's fundraising efforts for construction of its own baseball field. In 52 years of play, Hollywood Little League has not had a home field, instead sharing fields with area high schools. The PBPTCF donation will be used to build backstops, dugouts, team benches and a retractable outfield fence for the field, the first phase of the organization's "Home Field" project.

The PBPTCF is an advised fund of The Oregon Community Foundation. Founded 34 years ago, The Oregon Community Foundation works in partnership with individual, family, business and organizational donors to improve the lives of Oregonians through philanthropy and by building an endowment - now more than $900 million - for Oregon's future. OCF provides more than $48 million annually in grants and scholarships statewide.
