Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Nationals got off to a quick start offensively, plating three runs in the first frame against Kinston, but couldn't hold on to a 4-2 lead as they dropped the opener to the Indians, 9-5.

Starter Shairon Martis allowed two runs in the first on a walk and a pair of hits, putting the Nationals in an early hole.

Potomac was able to crawl back into the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs of off Kinston hurler Frank Herrmann. Herrmann didn't get much help from his defense, as the K-Tribe committed two errors to go along with three Nationals hits.

Mike Daniel, Chris Marrero and Matt Rogelstad all drove in runs for Potomac in the first to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

Marrero and Rogelstad combined to plate another run for Potomac in the third, recording back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to two.

Rogelstad and Marrero led the Nationals at the plate, both going 2-for-4, Marrero with a pair of doubles and Rogelstad with a pair of RBI, less than 10 hours after he hit in a simulated game against fellow Canadian Shawn Hill in a simulated game at The Pfitz.

The wheels came off in the following inning for Martis and the Nationals as Kinston surged ahead 6-4 and never looked back. The Indians touched Martis up for three hits and two walks in the fourth, an inning that saw eight batters head to the plate for Kinston.

Martis went four innings, allowing six runs, on seven hits, walking four and striking out six. The right-hander's record dropped to 8-7 on the season.

Grege Bunn replaced Martis and didn't fair much better, giving up a pair of hits and allowing two runs to score before closing out the sixth - an inning that saw Kinston plate three runs before the Nationals stopped the bleeding.

On the bright side for the Potomac bullpen, Gene Yost worked three innings of scoreless relief for manager Randy Knorr.

The Nationals managed to draw the game within four in the bottom of the ninth, when Brett McMillan singled in Brandon Powell, who had led off the inning with a double.

Potomac and Kinston continue their three-game set Tuesday at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium with a 7:35 game. Kinston's LHP Ryan Edell [9-4 3.21] will take on Potomac's LHP Justin Jones [5-5, 4.03] in a matchup of southpaws.
