Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Altoona Curve outfielder Jason Delaney today was named Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 22nd. The 24-year old outfielder had a sizzling week at the plate for Altoona, hitting .586 (17-for-29) with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, nine runs scored and a .966 slugging percentage in seven games. Among his top performances during the week included a 4-for-4, two-homer game on Monday vs. Bowie and a 5-for-5 effort last Wednesday vs. Bowie to match a club record for hits in a game. His 17 hits in 29 at-bats last week raised his season batting average with Altoona from .212 to .346.
Entering Monday's series opener at Blair County Ballpark against the Binghamton Mets (AA/Mets), Delaney, who was promoted from Class-A Lynchburg on June 27, is batting .346 with five doubles, five home runs and 19 RBI in 24 games. He also currently has a nine-game hitting streak, during which he is batting (.527, 19-for-36), and a franchise-record eight-game RBI streak.
Jason, a native of Hanson, Massachusetts, is in his third season in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization after being drafted in the 12th round of the 2005 June Draft out of Boston College. He opened the 2007 season at Lynchburg in the Carolina League, where he hit .340 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 72 games. At the time of his promotion to Altoona, he was leading the CL in both batting average and on-base percentage (.432).
Delaney joins Steven Pearce (June 25-July 1) and Luis Munoz (May 7-13) as the only other Curve players to earn Eastern League Player or Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Pearce was also selected as the league's Player of the Month for June.
