Spikes Snap Skid with 5-4 Win at Hudson Valley

The State College Spikes snapped a four game losing streak and took the middle game of a three-game set against the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 5-4 at Dutchess Stadium Wednesday night.

Tony Watson (5-0) once again was solid for State College, going 6.0 innings, giving up three runs and striking out five. Watson has won his last five decisions consecutively, while the Spikes are now 6-0 when he toes the rubber.

The Spikes got on the board early, in what was a sea-saw game until the fourth inning. In the first, Daniel Rios doubled with two outs, and was promptly knocked in by Miles Durham to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead.

The Renegades tied it immediately in the bottom of the first. Emeel Salem lead off the inning with a double and stole third base. He then crossed the plate when Cody Cipriano hit a sacrifice fly to right field to knot the score, 1-1.

The Spikes jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third after Brian Friday, in his professional debut was hit by a knuckleball from Diego Echeverria (0-5). Friday stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Rios then knocked him in with a sac fly to right field giving the Spikes the advantage.

Hudson Valley answered immediately in the third with an RBI single from Steve Vogt, scoring Salem after he singled and stole second base earlier in the inning. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the third inning.

The Spikes jumped out to a 3-2 lead when Ricky Diaz, who made his first start of the year at catcher flied out to right, scoring Marcus Davis who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Spikes would lead the rest of the night, as they tacked on two more in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Michael Ambrose, and an RBI double from Diaz.

Hudson Valley made it interesting, scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. A passed ball in the sixth by catcher Diaz and a wild pitch off reliever Michael Felix in the seventh drew the Renegades within one, but the trio of Felix, Jorge Charry, and Ronald Uviedo retired the last nine batters they faced consecutively, with Uviedo notching his sixth save in as many opportunities to secure the 5-4 win.

The Spikes will look to take the rubber-match of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Matt Foust will look for his first professional win. The Spikes will travel to Staten Island to take on the Yankees for a three-game set starting Friday before returning to action at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on July 24 to take on the Aberdeen Ironbirds and Auburn Doubledays for a six-game homestand.
