Beavers Rally Falls Short in Las Vegas

July 17, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Portland Beavers

LAS VEGAS - Chin-Lung Hu went three-for-three, Andy LaRoche homered and both players drove in two runs apiece as the Las Vegas 51's withstood a late rally to defeat the Portland Beavers 9-7 at Cashman Field on Tuesday night.

Las Vegas (45-51) overcame an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third against Portland starter Mike Thompson. Those eight runs were enough to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Drew Macias drove in four runs to spearhead the Beaver comeback that came up just short as Portland (41-56) dropped their second straight game. Ray Chang added an RBI double and two runs scored for Portland.

Casey Hoorelbeke (3-3) earned the victory for Las Vegas, despite allowing two runs and walking three batters in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Eric Hull gave up a base-hit in the ninth inning to bring the potential tying run to the plate but struck out Peter Ciofrone to end the game and earn his eighth save.

Thompson (2-8) surrendered nine runs on ten hits in five innings of work to take the loss.

The Beavers slowly chipped away at a 9-2 Las Vegas advantage, but could not catch the 51s, despite drawing ten walks. Portland left nine runners on base and grounded into four double plays.

Brian Myrow tripled home Craig Stansberry and scored on a throwing error in the game's opening inning to give Portland an early two-run lead.

The 51's came storming back, scoring four runs on the first, including an RBI double by LaRoche. Las Vegas tacked on four more runs in the next two innings before LaRoche's solo home run in the fifth inning made the score 9-2.

Macias singled home two runs in the sixth inning, and two more in the eighth. Portland brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth inning but 51's reliever Wesley Wright got Terrmel Sledge to ground into an inning-ending double play with two men on base.

The two teams will play the third game of the four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: LaRoche and John Lindsey have now driven in a combined 14 runs in the first two games of the series for Las Vegas ... with his first-inning triple, Myrow extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 18 ... Frank Menechino singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games ... Hu is now 14-for-26 since being called up to Las Vegas from Class AA Jacksonville on July 8 ... as the game began, the temperature at Cashman Field was 104 degrees.
