State College Spikes News Release
The State College Spikes lost their fourth in a row, dropping their record to 13-14 as they fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades at Dutchess Stadium 5-1 Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Spikes have now lost six of their last seven games, and have fallen below .500 for the first time since June 27.
The early portion of the game looked promising for State College as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After a two-out walk to Justin Byler, and a passed ball moved him to second base, Daniel Rios drove him in with an RBI single giving the Spikes the early edge.
That was all State College would get, as the Renegades got to starting pitcher Moises Robles (1-5) in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Steve Vogt and Mike McCormick in the bottom of the second, tied the game 1-1. Hudson Valley tacked on another run in the bottom of the third after a Miako Loyola ground out scored Cody Cipriano, who lead off the inning with a triple, pushing the Renegades lead to 2-1.
Hudson Valley added two more runs off Robles, scoring one in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Robles went 6.0 innings, striking out six and giving up four earned runs.
The final run Hudson Valley scored came off of reliever Adam Simon, who after striking out the side in the seventh, gave up an RBI single to Henry Wrigley that scored Vogt in the eighth to push the advantage to 5-1.
Renegades starting pitcher Jason Ragan (4-2) silenced the Spikes bats after giving up the early first inning run, going 7.0 strong innings, striking out four, and scattering five hits. Noah Booth pitched scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, striking out four total batters in the 2.0 innings to notch his second save of the year.
The Spikes will try to snap their four game skid tomorrow by sending Tony Watson (4-0) to the mound. The Spikes have won every game that Watson has pitched in this year. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game will be carried on the Spikes Radio Network, with an airtime set for 6:50 p.m.
State College will return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on July 24 to open a six game homestand against the Aberdeen Ironbirds and Auburn Doubledays. Tickets for the longest homestand of the year are still available and can be obtained by calling 877-99-SPIKES, by logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com, or by stopping by the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
