Lookouts to Celebrate the Return of Wellman with Rosin

July 17, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga Lookouts will welcome the return of Mississippi Braves and former Lookouts Manager Phillip Wellman with numerous activities and promotions to commemorate his infamous and theatrical ejection which took place on June 1st at AT&T Field. The first contest of the five-game series will be July 23rd.

Wellman's ejection, which has received over 2 million hits on Youtube, became an instant classic, as the animated Manager dislodged and tossed bases and incorporated the military crawl before tossing a rosin bag at home plate in grenade-like fashion. The video clip, taken by WDEF-TV News Channel 12 Sports Director Rick Nyman, hit the national news and stage in grand fashion. As a part of the festivities, Nyman will have the honor of throwing out the first rosin bag on the first game of the series.

"It certainly is an honor to be recognized like this, but I doubt my toss will be nearly as accurate as Mr. Wellman's," commented Nyman.

Also, for each game during the five-game series, the first 300 fans through the gates will receive a voucher good for a free rosin bag on their way out of the ballpark, sponsored by SportTalk on TalkRadio 102.3 FM.

During each game, outside of AT&T Field, fans will have the opportunity to test their rosin bag throwing skills. Fans will be encouraged to mimic Wellman's military crawl before hurling a rosin bag at a Phillip Wellman mannequin located 70 feet away. Each night, one skilled fan will come away with $50 for getting their rosin bag closest to the Wellman mannequin without touching it.

Furthermore, Dr. B and Quake of SportTalk will try their hand at tossing a rosin bag at the Wellman mannequin before Monday's scheduled 7:15 game. Throughout the series, fans who get their thrown rosin bag closer to the mannequin than Dr. B and Quake will be entered to win a free Lookouts'game inside the confines of an AT&T Field suite.

Numerous other activities throughout the games will be added to honor the event. All other scheduled promotions are still in effect. On Tuesday, one food or non-alcoholic beverage item will be just 25¢ for the entire game. Thursday, one lucky fan will leave the game with $1,000! Others will receive coupons for discounts around the stadium. Friday's game will be Helmet Giveaway and Fireworks Night.

Lookouts Owner and General Manager Frank Burke summed-up the sentiments of the series' activities by stating, "Minor League Baseball is all about fun and having a good time, and we want to capture the very essence of baseball by creating and sharing that excitement with people."

Tickets for this upcoming series or any other Lookouts' home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
