Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. -- The family of Vicki Kockinis McDermott and the Sacramento River Cats will present the first annual "V Award" on Friday, July 20, awarded to the top female high school athlete from the Sacramento area. The award will honor McDermott, who passed away on February 8 from complications of cancer at age 53.
The winner of The Vicki Kockinis McDermott Memorial Award - "The V Award" - will have a donation of $1,000 made in her name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and will be presented a specially designed commemorative award during a pre-game ceremony at Raley Field. This year's nominees include Granite Bay High School swimmer Alyssa Anderson, Sacramento High School basketball player Vicki Baugh and Oak Ridge High School track and cross county runner Alex Kosinski. The winner will be selected by 12 members of the McDermott and Kockinis families.
McDermott, an Elk Grove native, was a remarkable athlete and the first female inductee to the Sacramento Softball Association Hall of Fame. She played both softball and basketball at Sacramento State and was well-known as a gifted track and field competitor.
"The V Award has been created to keep Vicki's spirit alive and to let everyone in the community know what a special woman and athlete she truly was," said Mark McDermott, her husband. "Vicki felt it was important to recognize the importance of girls' athletics, particularly at the high school level, and those outstanding individuals who compete. We hope that the donation to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation will help in trying to find a cure for this deadly disease."
Tax-deductible contributions to multiple myeloma research can be made payable to the River Cats Foundation Inc.: Vicki Fund and sent to Dan Vistica, 400 Ballpark Drive, West Sacramento, CA 95691.
"The V Award is an amazing way for the McDermott and Kockinis families to honor the memory of Vicki," said Vistica, the River Cats' senior vice president and chief financial officer and chairman of the board of the River Cats Foundation. "As an organization, the River Cats feel privileged to be a part a very special night."
