McClain's Home Runs Not Enough In Fresno Loss

July 17, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA - Seemingly out of nowhere, the Tucson Sidewinders snuck up on the Fresno Grizzlies, escaping with a 7-6 victory in 10 innings in front of 5,448 fans.

Fresno (47-49) had complete control of the game until the eighth inning, when the Sidewinders (51-45) came through on a five-run inning, forcing the game into extra innings.

Tucson's Carlos Quentin led off the 10th inning for the Sidewinders and reached on an error by Fresno third baseman Justin Leone. Quentin advanced to third after a two-base error by Brian Wilson, who was attempting to pick-off Quentin. An RBI groundout by Tucson's Mark Johnson would score Quentin, the eventual winning run.

The Grizzlies' Scott McClain continues to live in orbit as he connected for yet another pair of home runs. McClain's 20th and 21st long balls of the season came on a couple of carbon copy plays involving him and Dan Ortmeier.

Leading off the fourth inning, Ortmeier singled to right field on a line drive over the head of Tucson second baseman Alberto Callaspo. McClain promptly followed with a two-run blast into the left field bleachers.

Here's where the déjà vu may have come into play for Grizzlies fans. Leading off the sixth inning, Ortmeier once again singled on a line drive to right field over the head of Callaspo. McClain stepped up to the plate and belted yet another two-run bomb out of Chukchansi Park.

For McClain, he now has six home runs in his last seven games, including two two-run home run games in the last week. It was also McClain's third multi-homer game of the year.

Fresno's Clay Timpner picked up only one hit on the night, giving him at least one hit in 20 of his last 21 games. The Grizzlies' Nate Schierholtz hit a 420-plus foot home run in the sixth inning, his sixth of the season. It was part of a 2 for 4 night for Schierholtz.

Grizzlies starter Sun Woo Kim turned in his second consecutive impressive performance for the Grizzlies, pitching seven innings while allowing just three hits and one run, earning the no-decision.

The second game of the series between the Grizzlies and Sidewinders will be a Tecate Taco Tuesday (presented by Tecate and 95.7 The Fox). Tacos will be available all game for just $2, while $2 16 oz. Tecate drafts will be available until 7:35. It will also be Beat the Heat Tuesday, where fans will receive 50 cents off field level reserved tickets for every degree over 100 should the temperature top the century mark.

Tickets are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
