Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Fresno, CA - Mark Johnson's RBI groundout in the top of the 10th inning scored Donnie Sadler with the go-ahead run and Randy Choate pitched out of trouble for his second save of the season in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Sidewinders scored a 7-6 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday night.
Johnson went 2-4 with four RBI and was key in both Tucson rallies. With the bases loaded and two out in the top of the eighth, Johnson dropped a single into shallow left-center field to score two runs and tie the game at six. In the tenth, Johnson's high chopper to third brought in Sadler with the go-ahead run.
Choate allowed a walk and a bunt single to open the bottom of the tenth but recorded two ground ball outs and a strikeout for the save.
The Sidewinders were held in check over the first seven innings as Fresno starter Sun-Woo Kim allowed just one run on three hits. He departed with a 6-1 lead but Tucson scored five times against the Grizzlies bullpen in the eighth on two bases loaded walks, a sacrifice fly and Johnson's two run single.
Chad Harville earned the win with two innings of shutout relief. Harville (5-2) allowed a hit and two walks but stranded a runner in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Carlos Quentin opened the tenth with a pop-up to third that was dropped by Justin Leone. Sadler's sacrifice bunt attempt was unsuccessful as Quentin was forced at second but Sadler reached first safely. Brian Wilson (0-2) threw wildly to first on a pick-off attempt allowing Sadler to go all the way to third and set the stage for Johnson.
Wilson allowed just one hit in his two innings in taking the loss.
Scott McClain hit a pair of two run homers off Sidewinders starter Casey Daigle. Daigle, appearing for the first time since his nose was broken by an errant throw last Sunday, allowed four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Sidewinders and Grizzlies play game two of their series on Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park. Left-hander Evan MacLane (6-6, 7.25) starts for Tucson against right-hander Matt Kinney (4-9, 4.89) for Fresno. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
